New Features

- Disclaimer -

recently_intro_icon.gifThe following new features have been added to the RightScale Cloud Management Platform. Be sure to read the documentation, follow best practice principles, and thoroughly test any new functionality before making any changes to your production deployment.

MultiCloud API

We are releasing an entirely new API, which defines the semantics of RightScale's API moving forward. "API 1.5" will only support non-Amazon clouds for now, and will co-exist with API 1.0 which is unchanged and will continue to support only AWS. We are working quickly to integrate AWS into this new API, at which point we will release it as API 2.0 and deprecate API 1.0. API 1.5 has been in use by some of our customers in production environments for a few months now. However, it is a Beta as we hope to gather feedback on MultiCloud usage and the new semantics. For more information, see RightScale API 1.5.

Provisioning API

User provisioning features can be found in the new API 1.5. With API 1.5, you have the ability to list users and their permissions, create users, set permissions and delete permissions. For more information, see Create a User in the RightScale API 1.5 guide. Since this is a RightScale concept, this feature is available for all supported clouds including AWS.

New Flow for Adding a Server or Server Array

When adding a new server or server array in the Dashboard, you will now be prompted with a step by step assistant. There are also several new fields available. The new add server flow will be replacing the dialog box that was previously used when adding a server. For adding a server, you will first choose a ServerTemplate, then select Server Details and lastly review your selections on the Confirm tab. It is the same experience when adding a server array, although you will have an additional tab called Array Details. The new flow includes the ability to create cloud objects within the assistant and also set server defaults. For more information, see Add Server Assistant and Add Server Array Assistant.

Server Defaults

A new addition to the RightScale Dashboard is the ability to set server defaults. These defaults can be set at the account, deployment and cloud levels. Previously, you had to select a Security Group and SSH Key each time you created a server or server array. Server defaults allow the ability to automate this process by pre-filling certain fields to efficiently add servers when using similar setups among them. Setting server defaults can be done during the add server flow or in the Server Defaults tab of your deployment. Account defaults can be set in account settings. For more information, see Server Defaults.

Community Translations

The RightScale Dashboard has integrated a translation center to manage translations of phrases in the Dashboard. All users have access to the translation center with the ability to view, vote and contribute to the translation process. The translation center offers tools to create and review translations for an extensive list of languages. When enough translation has taken place for a particular language, we will evaluate the language and if it is comprehensive enough, add it as an option in the Dashboard. You can access the translation center from the footer of the Dashboard and gain authorization with your RightScale login while staying logged in. For more information, see Dashboard Translation Guide.

Spot Pricing by Availability Zone

When adding a server using an AWS instance to a deployment or to an array, you now have the ability to view the Spot Price for each Availability Zone. You may view the prices available for each Availability Zone during your add server flow, and make a selection based off the Spot prices if you choose to do so. For more information, see Spot Instances.

Browser support

The Dashboard no longer supports Internet Explorer 7 or Chrome 7 as of this release. For more information on the browsers we support, see the FAQ Which browsers are supported by the RightScale Dashboard?

Unresolved Issues and Bugs

Unresolved Issues

With the new Add Server Array flow, if you choose to weight the array by availability zone, you will not be able to set spot pricing per availability zone. While you will be charged the going spot price for the availability zone that the instances run in, you will bid the single price you set for the entire array. This will be resolved in a future release.

Many bugs were resolved with this release. If you are interested in inquiring about a particular issue, please contact
