General Release Information

Terminology:

  • Alpha - Feature that has undergone simple testing and is expected to change, possibly significantly, before going into "beta" or "general release." Recommended for early access to new features and prototyping of new deployments/architectures. Only eligible for limited technical support. Service-level response times are not applicable to Alpha components.
  • Beta - Feature that has undergone significant testing and is not expected to significantly change before "general release." Recommended for non-production deployments.
  • General release - Feature that has undergone testing and field experience or is a minor upgrade from prior releases. Recommended for production upgrade after testing. Also known as general availability (GA).

New Features

Multiple EBS Volume Support

The Storage Toolbox and Database Managers now support the use of multiple EBS volumes for striping and other scenarios. By default, the ServerTemplates allow for up to 2 EBS volumes, but more can be added by modifying the cookbook metadata.

Support for Multiple Vhosts

There is now support for multiple virtual hosts (vhosts). Multiple vhost setup will involve creating multiple pools and configuring the load balancer to forward requests to one of these pools based on the virtual host name. This is done by simply updating the Virtual Host Names input: the first host name in this comma-separated list will be the default virtual host name, which will reply to other domains not in the list, e.g. *.test.com cases, IP and any hostname whose DNS name resolves to this IP. Having multiple load balancer server pools allows you to load balance multiple web tiers using the same load balancers.

Ability to Pull from Multiple Repository Types

There is now support to pull from multiple repository types. You have the option to specify a repository and pull from Git, SVN or Remote Object Store (Amazon Web Services S3 and Rackspace Cloud Files). 

Support for IDC Frontier

Support for IDC Frontier has been added to the Dashboard. As of this release, you may add IDC Frontier as a public cloud to your account. NOAH, IDC Frontier's IaaS Cloud service, allows you to use IT resources on demand. RightImages and core CloudStack ServerTemplates as well as ServerTemplates published by IDC Frontier are currently available in the MultiCloud Marketplace. To use IDC Frontier with RightScale, contact your account manager or sales@rightscale.com. For more information, see IDC Frontier.

Note: The numbers in parentheses included at the end of some entries are internal tracking numbers and can be ignored.

Base ServerTemplate for Linux

Description: This ServerTemplate is a starting point for custom ServerTemplate development. This ServerTemplate includes the following:

  • MultiCloud Images that reference the latest supported images with a frozen software repository date that has been tested.

LAMP All-In-One Trial with MySQL 5.5

Description: The LAMP All-In-One Trial with MySQL 5.5 ServerTemplate launches a complete LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) stack on a single server in any of the supported cloud infrastructures. It includes default values for all required inputs so you can launch a server in less than 15 minutes. It's designed for demonstrations purposes only and is not recommended for production use. If you want to launch a LAMP stack with your own application code and database, please use the LAMP All-In-One with MySQL 5.5 (Chef) ServerTemplate.

LAMP All-In-One with MySQL 5.1

Description: Basic all-in-one LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) server designed to work in a hybrid cloud setting. Load Balancer

Description: This ServerTemplate configures an HAProxy load balancer and Apache server. It is designed to work in a hybrid cloud setting, and with application server and database ServerTemplates as part of a three-tier web architecture. It also includes iptables management for clouds that do not have firewall services.

PHP App Server

Description: This ServerTemplate configures a PHP application server with Apache. It is designed to work in a hybrid cloud setting, and with a CLB, ELB, or Load Balancer ServerTemplate and Database ServerTemplate as part of a three-tier web architecture. It also includes iptables management for clouds that do not have firewall services.

Database Manager for MySQL 5.1

Description: Configures a MySQL 5.1 database server. This ServerTemplate provides a high-availability master/slave database configuration that can be used as the backbone for a variety of applications and workloads.

The ServerTemplate supports multiple clouds, using either instance-based storage or attachable volumes. Instance-based snapshot backups are automatically uploaded to your choice of remote object storage (Amazon S3 or Rackspace Cloud Files). It also includes iptables management for clouds that do not have firewall services.

Key Features:

  • Master or slave roles.
  • Uses attachable volumes or instance-based LVM volumes for primary backup.
  • Supports a secondary, disaster-recovery backup to S3 or Cloud Files remote object stores.

Storage Toolbox

Description: This ServerTemplate contains several useful recipes to set up and back up storage within a variety of contexts. It is used within other ServerTemplates to support runbook operations like backup and restore of databases.

  • Backup using volume snapshots or instance storage snapshots
  • Set up continuous backup schedules

Apache-Rails-Passenger App Server

Description: This ServerTemplate configures a Rails application server with the Apache HTTP Server running Phusion Passenger. It is designed to work in a hybrid cloud setting, and with a CLB, ELB, or Load Balancer ServerTemplate and Database ServerTemplate as part of a three-tier web architecture. It also includes iptables management for clouds that do not have firewall services.

Tomcat App Server

Description: This ServerTemplate configures a combined Tomcat and Apache application server, which uses the mod_jk connector plug-in. It creates an HTTP virtual host (vhost) and forwards requests to be specified port to server your web application.

Known Limitations

  • The DNS TTL check for the Database Master FQDN is not functioning properly. The check will always pass even if the TTL is set too high. This will be fixed in the next release.
