Terminology:

  • Alpha - Feature that has undergone simple testing and is expected to change, possibly significantly, before going into "beta" or "general release." Recommended for early access to new features and prototyping of new deployments/architectures. Only eligible for limited technical support. Service-level response times are not applicable to Alpha components.
  • Beta - Feature that has undergone significant testing and is not expected to significantly change before "general release." Recommended for non-production deployments.
  • General release - Feature that has undergone testing and field experience or is a minor upgrade from prior releases. Recommended for production upgrade after testing. Also known as general availability (GA).

Base ServerTemplate for Linux

Description: This ServerTemplate is a starting point for custom ServerTemplate development. This template includes the following:

  • Basic set of scripts for a RightLink-based server with logging, monitoring, alerts, etc.
  • MultiCloud Images that reference the latest supported images with a frozen software repository date that has been tested.
  • Basic set of alerts for most server type monitoring.
  • Examples of system required input variables.

  • Under some circumstances, servers launched on private and public clouds (such as Amazon and Rackspace) with the Xen hypervisor did not correctly synchronize their system times via Network Time Protocol (NTP). This is resolved. (3981)
  • Updated the "Timezone" input description to indicate that daylight saving time (DST) time changes will apply on the server. (4021)
  • The sys_firewall::default recipe no longer logs a "'net.ipv4.ip_conntrack_max' is an unknown key" error when run to enable or disable the Linux kernel firewall (via iptables). (4024)
  • Updated the setup_rule recipe in the sys_firewall cookbook to validate the "Firewall Rule Port" input to verify that a single port in the range 1-65536 is specified. (3993)

LAMP All-In-One with MySQL 5.1

Description: Basic all-in-one LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) server designed to work in a hybrid cloud setting. This server takes regular backups of the MySQL 5.1 database and saves them to public cloud storage. Suitable for single-server test, development, and production (non-redundant) purposes.

Load Balancer (Chef) - Beta

Description:

This ServerTemplate configures an HAProxy load balancer and Apache server. It is designed to work in a hybrid cloud setting, and with application server and database templates as part of a three-tier web architecture. It also includes iptables management for clouds that do not have firewall services.

  • Supports both HTTP and HTTPS
  • Firewall management within a three-tier scalable web architecture
  • Utilizes RightScale tag-based routing for connecting to application servers

Database Manager for MySQL 5.1 (Chef) - Beta

Description: Configures a MySQL 5.1 database server. This ServerTemplate provides a high-availability master/slave database configuration that can be used as the backbone for a variety of applications and workloads.

The ServerTemplate supports multiple clouds, using either instance-based storage or attachable volumes. Instance-based snapshot backups are automatically uploaded to your choice of remote object storage (Amazon S3 or Rackspace Cloud Files). It also includes iptables management for clouds that do not have firewall services.

  • Master or slave roles.
  • Uses attachable volumes or instance-based LVM volumes for primary backup.
  • Supports a secondary, disaster-recovery backup to S3 or Cloud Files remote object stores.
  • Support for striping of external volumes for faster database performance.
  • Continuous snapshot backups using a grandfather-father-son paradigm (on clouds with volume support).
  • Assisted database restoration, including stripe re-creation.
  • Provides scripts for master to slave fail-over, restoration of master, and more.
  • Choice of DNS providers (DNS Made Easy, DynDNS, AWS Route53).
  • iptables management within a three-tier scalable web architecture for clouds that do not have firewall services.
  • Pre-configured monitoring and alerts.

  • Added support for Rackspace Service Net (SNET), Rackspace's internal private networking service, in recipes that work with Rackspace Cloud Files. Leave the new "Rackspace SNET" recipe input set to "true" to enable this. (4040)
  • Renamed the ntp cookbook to sys_ntp.
  • Added the rs_tools::default boot recipe, which installs RightScale premium tools and dependencies.
  • Added a new operational recipe, db::do_init_and_become_master. When run, this recipe initializes your MySQL database server, tags it as the master, immediately runs a backup to volume-based storage (or Rackspace Cloud Files, in the case of Rackspace servers), and schedules a cron job to run daily backups in the future.
  • Added new db::do_dump_export and db::do_dump_schedule_enable operational recipes. The db::do_dump_export recipe performs a database dump to a remote object storage (ROS) location such as an Amazon S3 bucket or Rackspace Cloud Files container. Similarly, running db::do_dump_schedule_enable schedules this database dump to run as a daily cron job.
  • Added a new db::do_dump_import operational recipe that imports a database dump from a remote object storage location (e.g. Amazon S3 or Rackspace Cloud Files).
  • Added a new db::do_dump_schedule_disable operational recipe. Running this recipe removes the daily scheduled cron job set up by the db::do_dump_schedule_enable recipe.
  • Added new recipe inputs—"Dump Container," "Dump Schema/Database Name," "Dump Prefix," "Dump Storage Account Id," "Dump Storage Account Provider," and "Dump Storage Account Secret"—to support the new "do_dump" recipes added to the ServerTemplate cookbooks.
  • Added a new db::do_backup_schedule_enable operational recipe that lets you schedule snapshot backups to volume-based storage such as Amazon EBS
  • Added a new "NTP Servers" input in the sys_ntp::default recipe, which lets you specify a comma-separated list (array) of Network Time Protocol time servers to connect to. The default value is "time.rightscale.com, ec2-us-east.time.rightscale.com, ec2-us-west.time.rightscale.com." (4044)
  • Previously, running the do_appservers_deny decommission recipe (from the db cookbook) sometimes logged an error like "undefined method `[]' for nil:NilClass." This is fixed. (3912)

Storage Toolbox (Chef) - Beta

Description: This ServerTemplate contains several useful recipes to set up and back up storage within a variety of contexts. It is used within other templates to support runbook operations like backup and restore of databases.

  • Set up consistent storage blocks on instances or attachable volumes
  • Backup using volume snapshots or instance storage snapshots
  • Set up continuous backup schedules
  • Perform one-off backups with a click of a button
  • Save off-site backups in cloud object storage
  • Backup and restore across regions and clouds

Database Manager for Microsoft SQL Server - Beta

Description: This is a premium ServerTemplate that configures a Microsoft SQL Server stand-alone database server or pair of servers in a high-availability (HA) configuration (synchronous mirroring). This template supports the following Windows/SQL Server versions across the Amazon EC2, Rackspace and CloudStack clouds:

  • Windows 2003 Server / SQL Server 2005 Standard (on AWS)
  • Windows 2008 Server / SQL Server 2008 Standard (on AWS)
  • Windows 2008R2 Server / SQL Server 2008R2 Standard (on AWS, Rackspace, CloudStack)
     

The template applies best-practice disk configuration for system and user databases, as well as configuration for log and tempdb. Microsoft SQL Server data will be stored using dynamically created volumes (Amazon EBS or CloudStack volumes), or on separate drives created via repartition of the primary instance volume (for Rackspace). Backups can be performed using cloud-specific volume snapshots (on Amazon and CloudStack) or to remote storage (Amazon S3 or Rackspace Cloud Files, supported for all clouds). The template uses Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to ensure data consistency when doing snapshot backups, and configures policy to perform scheduled backups. In addition, manual import and export to remote storage is supported on all configurations to enable migration among all supported clouds.

The template supports graceful (no data loss) and forceful (possible data loss) manual failover, with the latter to be used for disaster-recovery situations.   • Updated database backup support to allow CloudStack and Amazon EC2 users to save database backup snapshots to Amazon EBS or CloudStack volumes or—for any supported cloud provider—save SQL Server backup files to an Amazon S3 bucket or Rackspace Cloud Files container. New scripts, including a DB SQLS Setup volumes and services boot script and EBS Backup Data and Log volumes script (replacing EBS Backup Data and Log volumes) are included to support this.
  • Added new S3 / Cloud Files backup operational scripts, which let users back up and restore individual databases or all (non-system) databases on a server using Amazon S3 or Rackspace Cloud Files. These scripts simplify the process of migrating SQL Server databases between different cloud providers.
  • Added a new SERVER_MODE input (replacing the previous MIRRORING_ROLE input), which lets you run SQL Server in "standalone" mode rather than as a principal or mirror server in a database mirroring environment.

Microsoft IIS App Server

Description: This ServerTemplate configures an IIS (Internet Information Services) web application server. It is to be used in conjunction with a local or remote Microsoft SQL Server instance and HAProxy load balancer or Amazon’s Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) service. The Windows-PowerShell-based RightScripts automatically connect to a database tier on boot. The RightScripts also download and deploy an application on boot. This ServerTemplate includes built-in monitoring and alerts on CPU, memory, and disk. To get started with an IIS web application server, see Launch a Microsoft IIS Application Server.

  • Added Windows Server 2008 R2 RightImage support for Cloud.com CloudStack with the XenServer or VMware vSphere (ESXi) hypervisor.
  • Updated the IIS Add connection string boot script to allow users to specify keyword values in the IIS connection string—e.g., database name, SQL Server instance name, and SQL Server login and password—as RightScript inputs. (Previously, users specified the entire connection string as a single script input.)
  • IIS log and application files can now optionally use volume storage (Amazon EBS or CloudStack volumes) or a separate disk partition in the case of Rackspace servers as an alternative to the default . We have added new APP_VOLUME_SIZE, LOG_VOLUME_SIZE, and other RightScript inputs to support this feature.
  • Added a new script, SYS upload IIS logs, which archives IIS logs older than one day to the remote file storage type of your choice (Amazon S3 or Rackspace Cloud Files). The boot script SYS Configure IIS logs rotation policy automatically creates a Windows scheduled task to run this script once daily.
  • Added a new operational script, SYS Convert PFX, which converts an attached .pfx-format certificate and private key file into separate .pem (private key) and .crt (certificate) files, in PEM format.
  • The DB SQLS Create login operational script now lets you create a SQL Server login on a remote SQL Server instance; a local SQL Server Express instance is no longer used with this ServerTemplate.

Base ServerTemplate for Windows

Description: This ServerTemplate is a starting point for custom ServerTemplate development in Windows. This template includes the following:

  • Basic set of PowerShell scripts for setting up an Administrator password, common monitoring, and alerts.
  • MultiCloud Images that reference the latest supported images.
  • Examples of system-required input variables.

  • MultiCloud Images do not support the new Amazon US-Oregon region at this time.
     

Load Balancer (Chef) - Beta

  • On Ubuntu servers, when HAProxy starts, the HAProxy Statistics Report displays a single "disabled-server" line with a DOWN status instead of the more appropriate MAINT (not checked) status. This DOWN-status server continues to display in the report even after your application servers start and register with HAProxy.
     

Database Manager for MySQL 5.1 - Chef

  • Snapshot backups from previous Database Manager ServerTemplates (11H1 and earlier) are currently not compatible with the new Database Manager for MySQL 5.1 - Chef ServerTemplate. You will need to manually migrate your data.
  • Under some circumstances, when running Cloud.com CloudStack with the KVM hypervisor and managing volume storage, you may experience issues or errors related to the storage device (/dev/vdb). This is due to a known limitation for this cloud provider and hypervisor combination.
