Terminology:

  • alpha - Feature that has undergone simple testing and is expected to change, possibly significantly, before going into "beta" or "general release." Recommended for early access to new features and prototyping of new deployments/architectures. Only eligible for limited technical support. Service Level Response times are not applicable to Alpha software.
  • beta - Feature that has undergone significant testing and is not expected to significantly change before "general release." Recommended for non-production deployments.
  • general release - Feature that has undergone testing and field experience or is a minor upgrade from prior releases. Recommended for production upgrade after testing. (Also known as general availability (GA).)

New Features

Configurable Swap Size

Swap size is now a configurable attribute. The ServerTemplates include a Chef attribute called "Swap size in GB" which has predefined dropdown selections for common swap sizes (0.5GB, 1.0GB, 1.5GB). However, depending on the size of your instance, you might want to override the dropdown and specify a larger swap size. The attribute will not have a default selection predefined at the ServerTemplate level because it is a user-specific parameter that should be defined based on your server's needs. Note that if you define this input/attribute at the Deployment level, all servers will use the same swap size, which may not be the desired setting for each server, especially if the servers are of different instance sizes. Therefore you may want to clone the ServerTemplates so that you can define an appropriate (default) swap size for each type of ServerTemplate.

Overriding RightScale Cookbooks

We have created a repository to easily override RightScale cookbooks when using Chef, allowing the customization of application parameters. A repository specifically for overriding cookbooks is now available. Using this process, we have provided a MySQL cookbook with parameters already tagged for tuning. For more information, see Auto-Tune MySQL for Database Manager for MySQL (Chef).

Trace Chef Errors

With the new version of RightLink 5.7, you now have a full stack trace on Chef errors. This significantly aids in debugging your Chef ServerTemplates.  RightLink 5.7 has been included in the CentOS 5.6 RightImages as well as the new Windows 2008R2 images.

Unresolved Issues

Long Hostnames Create Unusable Rackspace Instances

The limit for creating a hostname for Rackspace instances is 46 characters, including the additional characters we prepend. If you use more, the server wil launch, but will get stuck in a booting state.
