Summary of Changes

Compatibility Release GA

Our first "Compatibility Release" is now generally available (GA). We test and release all of our most popular ServerTemplates and RightImages at the same time with the same software repository date. This helps ensure that RightScripts developed for one ServerTemplate and operating system should be compatible with other ServerTemplates and operating systems that are also part of the release. You can see the specific ServerTemplates released below, or visit the "11H1 Compatible" category in the MultiCloud Marketplace for ServerTemplates in this release. Read more about Compatibility Releases here.

Support for EC2 Tokyo

AWS recently announced a new Tokyo region for EC2. We now have full support for the new EC2 AP-Tokyo region, including RightImages and those ServerTemplates published in the Compatibility Release. Read more about our support for EC2 Tokyo here.

Announcing Windows ServerTemplates and RightImages on Rackspace

We have added Windows ServerTemplate and RightImage support for Rackspace. This complements our current Dashboard support, which includes monitoring, usage reporting, and provisioning management. To get started, use the new Windows Base ServerTemplate listed below. If you plan to use this public beta, please contact your sales representative so we may collect your feedback directly.

Announcing Database Manager for Microsoft SQL Server

To support our Windows customers, we have made available a public alpha of our new Database Manager for Microsoft SQL Server. This single-server template provisions a Windows 2003 / SQL Server 2005 or Windows 2008 / SQL Server 2005 service with automated AWS EBS backups. For more information, see Database Manager with MS SQL Server (Alpha).

New "Base" ServerTemplate

The new Base ServerTemplate offers a basic set of scripts for a RightLink-based servers with logging, monitoring, alerts, etc. This Base ServerTemplate is also part of the compatibility release, giving you the ability to use pre-built configurations from other templates within the release. It is an ideal starting point for developing custom ServerTemplates. For more information on this SeverTemplate, see Base ServerTemplate - 11H1

Support for Private Cloud

You can now modify and create ServerTemplates that you can use in your private Cloud.com Cloudstack using published RightImages. Xen images are now available for Cloud.com. Please contact your Sales Account Manager for details. Also, visit our documentation:

Ancestor:  LAMP v4 All-In-One

Supported OS: Ubuntu 10.04 (default)

Additional Documentation (if any):

  • RightScript “PHP DB Connection Configure v2” included some trailing white space after the closing php tag ‘?>’. This issue has been resolved. (w-3104)
  • ‘WEB app S3 code checkout – 11H1.b1 [rev 2]’ fails for small, but valid packages. This problem has been resolved. (w-3683)
  • The service cron reload was not needed in “Sys Monitoring install script 11H1.b1 [rev8]”, so it was removed. (w-3696)
  • “DB MySQL s3 continuous mysqldump backups = 11H1.b1” was using an invalid filename (.sh) for cron (run-parts) in Debian/Ubuntu. “.sh” has been removed from the filename. (w-3724)
  • innodb_flush_method=O_DIRECT has been added to MySQL EBS Templates, which will eliminate double buffering (fs,mysql). (w-3726)
  • CentOS 5.4 has been added to Database manager for MySQL 5.1 Toolbox LAMP AIO MySQL 5.1. (w-3747)
  • The currently published version of MySQL 5.1 and 5.0 installs use the default mysql-server logrotate entry which points to three different log files. This was leading to servers maxing out the root partition due to the ever-expanding log. We have moved all the logs (including the backup cron) into /var/log/mysql and simply create a rotate job that rotates everything in that directory. (w-3674)

Database Manager with MySQL 5.1 - 11H1

Description: The RightScale Database Manager for MySQL is one of our most popular premium ServerTemplates. It provides a high-availability master/slave database configuration that can be used as the backbone for a variety of applications and workloads. It is cloneable, just like any other RightScale ServerTemplate, so you can make adjustments specific to your organization's technology or work flow needs.

MultiCloud Marketplace Linkhttp://www.rightscale.com/library/server_templates/Database-Manager-with-MySQL-5-/18163

Ancestor:  N/A

Supported OS: Ubuntu 10.04, CentOS 5.4 (default)

Additional Documentation (if any):

  • Now supports CentOS.
  • The currently published version of MySQL 5.1 and 5.0 installers use the default mysql-server logrotate entry which points to three different log files. This was leading to servers maxing out the root partition due to the ever-expanding log. We have moved all the logs (including the backup cron) into /var/log/mysql and simply create a rotate job that rotates everything in that directory. (w-3674)
  • Instead of having a “my.cnf” attachment for every possible EC2 instance type and server-type, we now have an erb template and attributes file that supports all configurations. This provides improved maintainability and allows RightScale to support additional clouds. (w-3691)
  • The service cron reload was not needed in “Sys Monitoring install script 11H1.b1 [rev8]”, so it was removed. (w-3696)
  • The MySQL backup cron job was outputting to /var/log/mysql-binary-backup.log. When a server was terminated, these log files were lost. The MySQL binary back cron job now uses syslog instead of local file. (w-3697)
  • The "SYS Add Swap Partition” RightScript contained incorrect info. The script said “This script should not be run on m1.small and m1.medium instance sizes as they already have swap enabled by default.” However, there is no m1.medium instance type, so it has been corrected to say “c1.medium.” (w-3706)
  • The name of this script, “DNS RightScale tools install – 11H1.b1” was causing confusion because it was very close in name to "DNS tools install - 11H1.b1" which is used by Database Manager. This script has been removed. (w-3708)
  • innodb_flush_method=O_DIRECT has been added to MySQL EBS Templates, which will eliminate double buffering (fs,mysql). (w-3726)
  • DNS Tools Install was causing failure outside of MySQL ServerTemplates because it was missing the /opt/rightscale/dns_directory. This script has been enhanced to be used in external applications. (w-3729)

Database Manager with MySQL 5.0 - 11H1

Description: MySQL 5.0 database server that acts as either a standalone database server or as a master/slave database server designed for continuous backups and data replication. Includes RightScale's Database Manager functionality to create, restore, backup, promote, and terminate database servers in a cluster. Attached EBS Volumes are used to store MySQL data. Supports the use of multiple volumes (EBS Stripe) for increased performance. Micro instance types and Start/Stop functionalities are not supported.

Database Manager with MySQL 5.1 Toolbox - 11H1

Description: Basic MySQL 5.1 server that can be used for testing and troubleshooting purposes. Use the template's operational RightScripts to perform various maintenance, test, and diagnostic tasks. • The service cron reload was not needed in “Sys Monitoring install script 11H1.b1 [rev8]”, so it was removed. (w-3696)
  • The “DB Create MySQL EBS stripe volume” script was failing because the s3cmd was missing a new (required) parameter called “AWS_CALLING_FORMAT” which needs to be specified in order to grab a file from an S3 bucket. This issue has been resolved. (w-3719)
  • innodb_flush_method=O_DIRECT has been added to MySQL EBS Templates, which will eliminate double buffering (fs,mysql). (w-3726)

  • The “EBS Stripe Restore and Grow Volume” script was not issuing the proper ‘lvextend’ command. The command has been changed to extend the volume by the amount of free space, rather than setting the new size to the amount of free space. (w-3680)
  • The service cron reload was not needed in “Sys Monitoring install script 11H1.b1 [rev8]”, so it was removed. (w-3696)
  • “lvm2” was not installed when booting Ubuntu using “Base ServerTemplate-11H1.b1”. “lvm2” has been added to the list of required packages for the “EBS stripe RightScale tools install – 11H1.b1” RightScript. (w-3699)

Ancestor:  same

Supported OS: CentOS 5.4, Ubuntu 10.04

Additional Documentation (if any):

  • RightScript “PHP DB Connection Configure v2” included some trailing white space after the closing php tag ‘?>’. This issue has been resolved. (w-3104)
  • ‘WEB app S3 code checkout – 11H1.b1 [rev 2]’ fails for small, but valid packages. This problem has been resolved. (w-3683)

MultiCloud Images

The MultiCloud Image name also denotes the type of image (AMI) that it's mapped to and whether it's a traditional S3-based image or an EBS-based image.  EBS-based images will include "EBS" in the name.  For an exhaustive list of all published MultiCloud Images, go to the MultiCloud Marketplace (Design -> MultiCloud Marketplace -> MultiCloud Images).

V5 Images

'EBS' in the MCI name denotes that it's referencing EBS-based AMIs (i.e. bootable EBS Snapshots).
If 'EBS' is not found in the namespace, the MCI will reference standard S3-based AMIs.

Known Limitations

RightScript fails when launching a background process

Upon running a RightScript that attempts to start a background task, you may notice that the script/recipe never finishes and execution hangs, stalling the boot process. This is due to the way that our Chef/Rightscript provider handles detaching from a subprocess, and is only present in our v5 images. See FAQ 166 for more information.
