Mephisto All-In-One v8

Description:  Mephisto (mephistoblog.com) is a blog application that's written in Ruby on Rails. See how easy it is to launch a Ruby on Rails application using our Rails all-in-one ServerTemplate. The ServerTemplate configures an instance that acts as a load balancer, Rails application (Mephisto) and MySQL all-in-one server. It's configured for HTTP traffic only (not SSL), along with a mongrel_cluster. This ServerTemplate demonstrates how to automatically have a full web+rails+db stack pulled from an SVN repository at the click of a button. Default settings have been set, but you can easily override them by redefining the ServerTemplate's Input variables. Once your Mephisto all-in-one server is operational, connect to http://<ec2publicdns>/admin to configure your blog. Use 'admin' and 'test' as user and password, respectively.

  • Follow the All-in-one BlogEngine Server (Windows) tutorial to see how easy it is to launch a Windows server in the cloud using this ServerTemplate.
  • The general availability (GA) release of this ServerTemplate uses v5.5 RightLink RightImages.
  • The latest version of this ServerTemplate includes a new suite of "sketchy" monitoring plugins.  Three additional graph types are now supported: IIS requests, IIS bytes, and IIS connections.
  • Note:  At the time when this ServerTemplate was published, some of RightScale's monitoring servers had not been updated to support the new suite of IIS sketchy plugins.   We are currently in the process of updating all of our monitoring servers to support the new IIS graph types.   If you launch a server using this ServerTemplate and are unable to view any monitoring graphs, it's probably because the server is connected to a monitoring server that has yet to be updated.  In such cases, you might want to relaunch the server to see if it will be associated with an updated "sketchy" server.  Otherwise, you can try again later.  All monitoring servers should be updated around a week after the release.

Operating System and Software Package Support

For more information, see the OS and Software Package Support table.

Increased Linux support by the RightLink Installer (alpha)

The RightLink Linux package can now be installed on RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) and Novell SuSE (SLES).  Note that these platforms are not officially supported by RightScale Engineering, meaning that some functionality such as frozen repositories may not work correctly.  The intent is to allow customers to experiment with RightLink on their operating system distribution of choice, and to enable Services to create custom solutions for various Linux distributions that our customers want to run.  Tutorials are available that help walk you through the process of installing RightLink on your own RHEL, OEL, or SUSE images.  See Creating RightScale-enabled Images with RightLink. (az-10995)

Extended monitoring functionality for Windows

Users can now extend RightScale's core Windows monitoring support to enable any metrics collected within WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation).  Extension is accomplished through configuration files describing the WMI query and expected fields (counter vs. gauge, etc) or by writing custom Ruby scripts.  See Custom Windows Monitoring.  (az-10924)

MultiCloud Images

The MultiCloud Image name also denotes the type of image (AMI) that it's mapped to and whether it's a traditional S3-based image or an EBS-based image.  EBS-based images will include "EBS" in the name.  For an exhaustive list of all published MultiCloud Images, go to the MultiCloud Marketplace (Design -> MultiCloud Marketplace -> MultiCloud Images).

V5 Images

'EBS' in the MCI name denotes that it's referencing EBS-based AMIs (i.e. bootable EBS Snapshots).
If 'EBS' is not found in the namespace, the MCI will reference standard S3-based AMIs.

Unresolved Issues

Please report issues to:  support@rightscale.com

Can't bundle an instance using RightImage Ubuntu 8.04 v5.5

Currently, you will receive an error message if you click the Bundle action button in the Dashboard on a running server that's using one of the following S3-based RightImages:

  • RightImage_Ubuntu_8.04_i386_v5.5
  • RightImage_Ubuntu_8.04_x64_v5.5

An earlier fix to Linux images changed the way environment variables were set when connecting to the instance non-interactively (the way the bundling mechanism connects). As a result, ec2_home does not get set and the system does not know where to find the scripts it needs to run the bundle functionality.

As a workaround, you can either SSH into the instance and perform a bundle or add the following lines to the top of /root/.bashrc:

export PATH=$PATH:/home/ec2/bin
export EC2_HOME=/home/ec2

Example:

# ~/.bashrc: executed by bash(1) for non-login shells.
# see /usr/share/doc/bash/examples/startup-files (in the package bash-doc)
# for examples export PATH=$PATH:/home/ec2/bin export EC2_HOME=/home/ec2

# If not running interactively, don't do anything [ -z "$PS1" ] && return ....
