When you create a Virtual Private Cloud in EC2 using RightScale, we allow you to configure multiple subnets within that cloud. From there, you can launch instances in any of the subnets you have created. The means for describing your IP space for each subnet is Classless Inter-Domain Routing or a CIDR block. CIDR is an excellent way to specify a subnet by using a dotted quad IP and a subnet in a single compact string, without the more wasteful tradtiional netmasks. (For example, a 255.255.255.0 netmask for a Class C internet address.) Of course, CIDR blocks also allow for more efficient use of IP addresses within the various Class A, B, or Class C internet addresses.

  • Name - Name your Virtual Private Cloud
  • CIDR Block - The VPC's CIDR Block. (Ex: 10.0.3.0/24)
  • Instance tenancy - "Dedicated" is used for security purposes, meaning your instances will use dedicated hardware, and no other accounts will share the same hardware for their instances.
  • Description - A description about the VPC.

Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) is a secure and seamless bridge between an existing company IT infrastructure and the AWS cloud. Amazon VPC enables enterprises to connect their existing infrastructure to a set of isolated AWS compute resources via a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection, and to extend their existing management capabilities such as security services, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems to include their AWS resources. Amazon VPC enables you to use your own isolated resources within the AWS cloud, and then connect those resources directly to your own datacenter using industry-standard encrypted IPsec VPN connections. See Amazon for more information.

  • New VPC - Create a new Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). You will be presented with a webform to provide a VPC Name, CIDR Block (to define your IP space) and a Description.

VPCs tab

The VPCs tab shows all of the virtual private clouds that have been created. Fields

  • Name - The editable name of the VPC
  • AWS ID - AWS-issued ID of the VPC.
  • CIDR Block - The VPC's CIDR Block. (Ex: 10.0.3.0/24)
  • Instance tenancy - "Dedicated" is used for security purposes, meaning your instances will use dedicated hardware, and no other accounts will share the same hardware for their instances.
  • DHCP Options - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) configuration parameters information that is passed to your VPC.
  • Internet Gateway - The AWS VPC side of a connection to the public Internet.

Actions

  • Delete - Delete the VPC.

Gateways tab

The Gateways tab is where you establish network connection information between your corporate network and your Virtual Private Cloud in AWS via the following action buttons:

  • New Customer gateway - Create your corporate side of the network.
  • New VPN gateway - Create AWS end of the network connection.
  • New VPN connection - Create the VPN connecting the two endpoints above (customer and VPN gateways).

The Route Table is what a subnet uses for routing.

Fields

  • Name - Editable name of the route table.
  • ID - AWS-issued ID of the route table.
  • Main - The route table that the associated subnet automatically uses for routing. A main route table is automatically created with every VPC, but can be changed to a different route table of your choice.
  • Routes - The configurable destinations in CIDR that your route table consists of.
  • Associations - The subnet(s) the route table is associated with.

Subnets tab

The Subnets tab lists all of the VPC's Subnets. You can also create a new Subnet.

Action buttons

  • Edit - Edit the subnet.
  • Delete - Delete the subnet.
  • New - Create a new subnet.

Fields

  • Name - Editable name of the subnet.
  • AWS ID - AWS-issued ID for the subnet.
  • CIDR block - The subnet's CIDR Block. (Ex: 10.0.3.0/24)
  • Availability Zone - The Availability Zone where the VPC and the subnet exist.
