Add a Cost Quota to an Enterprise Account

Objective

To add a cost quota alert to a RightScale account.

Prerequisites

  • You must have an Enterprise RightScale Account.  To enable an Enterprise account, contact sales@rightscale.com
  • 'enterprise_manager' user role privileges

Overview

As an Enterprise admin ('enterprise_manager'), you can set up cost quota alerts for the RightScale accounts in your Enterprise to better track the account-specific cloud usage costs that are currently being accrued for the current month.  The purpose of this feature is to give the Enterprise manager more visibility and trackability of overall usage costs.  The quotas are not designed to act as a hard limit that cannot be exceeded.  Users will still be able to incurring additional cloud usage costs for that monthly period by launching instances, creating volumes, etc. even if they've exceeded their cost quota limit.   RightScale will simply send you alert email notifications as friendly warnings or reminders.

You will receive an alert email as a warning when you have reached 90% of your quota, and again when you have reached 100% of your quota.  Each user with 'enterprise_manager' user role privileges in the Enterprise account will receive these alert emails. 

Steps

  • Navigate to Settings > Enterprise > Accounts tab
  • Click the Edit icon to open a box that allows you to enter an amount for your quota
  • Fill out the dialog box to enter a quota that is a positive monetary value 
  • Click Save

 

Your quota should now be displayed on your Account index tab.  (Click the image below to enlarge.)

Email Notifications

As an Enterprise admin, you will receive a warning email when your quota exceeds 90%, and a critical email when your quota has reached 100%. These emails will give you a summary of your quota status, and offer further steps to manage your quota.

Warning example

Subject: Your RightScale account is approaching its quota

You are receiving this email because one of your RightScale accounts has reached 90% of its designated
quota.

Account: [Account Name]
Designated monthly quota: $1,000.00
Current usage: $900.00

Even though you have not exceeded your quota at this point, we are letting you know in advance so you
can closely monitor your usage to prevent higher than expected costs. No additional action has been taken.
If you reach your quota, another email will be sent, but no further action will be taken on your account.
