Create VPC Subnets

Objective
You can create subnets within your VPC that are accessible through an established IPsec VPN connection. The following steps show you how to create public and private subnets (the example shows three of each, for the purpose of demonstrating best practices for high availability). Unlike VPC DHCP options, you can go back and edit existing subnet information by selecting the subnet and using the Edit button. Once created, you can launch instances in that subnet of your VPC. However, you will not be able to connect to that instance from your corporate network until your VPN connection is established.
Prerequisites
A previously created VPC where you want your subnets.
Steps
The following examples create three public subnets (each in a different Availability Zone) and three private subnets (each in a different Availability Zone). Creating subnets in different Availabiity Zones is a best practice for achieving high availability.
Create Public Subnets
- Go to your VPC (Clouds > AWS Region > VPCs > your VPC)

Click the Subnets tab.

Click new.

Configure the VPC:

Enter a name (for example, 'public-a').

Enter the CIDR IP (for example, 10.0.0.0/24).

Select Availability Zone (for example, us-east-1a).

Enter a description (optional).
-
Click save.

Click new.

Configure the VPC:

Enter a name (for example, 'public-b').
-
Enter the CIDR IP (for example, 10.0.1.0/24).

Select Availability Zone (for example, us-east-1c).
-
Enter a description (optional).
-
Click save.

Click new.

Configure the VPC:.
- Enter a name (for example, 'public-d')

Enter the CIDR IP (for example, 10.0.2.0/24)

Select Availability Zone (for example, us-east-1d)

Enter a description (optional)

Click save.
Create Private Subnets

On the Subnets tab of your VPC, click new.

Configure the VPC:

Enter a name (for example, 'private-a').
-
Enter the CIDR IP (for example, 10.0.3.0/24).

Select Availability Zone (for example, us-east-1a).

Enter a description (optional).
-

Click save.

Click new.

Configure the VPC:

Enter a name (for example, 'public-b').
-
Enter the CIDR IP (for example, 10.0.4.0/24).

Select Availability Zone (for example, us-east-1c).

Enter a description (optional).

Click save.

Click new.

Configure the VPC:.
- Enter a name (for example, 'public-d')

Enter the CIDR IP (for example, 10.0.5.0/24)

Select Availability Zone (for example, us-east-1d)

Enter a description (optional)

Click save.
Your VPC subnets are now setup and you can view and edit them on the VPC Subnets tab.
