Why does my Rackspace server go from Pending straight to an "Error" state?

Table of Contents

Background

When attempting to launch a Rackspace server, the state of the server goes directly from Pending to an "Error" state.

Answer

This may be due to the length of the server's nickname in the RightScale Dashboard. If the server's nickname exceeds 47 characters, the server will not boot and will remain in the "Error" state.

To fix this problem, shorten the name of the server to something more manageable, and re-launch the Server.

Note: This bug has been reported and should hopefully be resolved in a future release.
