Objective

Register your Google Compute Engine cloud account with RightScale so that you can use the Dashboard to manage your Google Compute Engine cloud resources.

Prerequisites

  • If you do not have a Google Compute Engine cloud account, you must sign-up and create an account before you can complete this tutorial. You must manually sign-up for the "Google Compute Engine" service and set up your billing settings.
  • The "Google Compute Engine" service must be listed as "ON" in the Google's APIs Console. (view screenshot) You must wait for Google to activate your GCE account and services before you can successfully add the cloud to a RightScale account.
  • You must have 'admin' user role privileges to add valid Google Compute Engine credentials to a RightScale account.

Steps

  1. Go to Settings > Account Settings > Clouds tab.  Click Connect to a Cloud.
  2. Click the Add icon (+) next to Google.
  3. Enter your Google Compute Engine cloud credentials. You will need to enter your Project ID and click Continue. RightScale will make an API call to GCE's API endpoint to retrieve all of your cloud resources so they appear in the RightScale Dashboard.
    • Where is my GCE Project ID?
Log into the Google Cloud Console and go to your list of projects. (view screenshot)

  1. Check the cloud's status. On the same Clouds tab, check the status of your cloud. Both of these items require active (green) status to successfully launch cloud servers:

Troubleshooting

Username Mismatch

Important! The Google username you signed in with to request access must match the username that's tied to the Google Project ID that you are adding to the RightScale account. Otherwise, you can add Google as a cloud to the RightScale account, but it will not be usable.

Once you allow access, you will see that the Google Compute Engine cloud is "enabled" under the Clouds tab in the Dashboard. All of your Google Compute Engine resources are now visible under the Clouds menu (CloudsGoogle Compute Engine).

Next Steps

Allow RightScale several minutes to populate your account with the appropriate images before launching servers. In the RightScale Dashboard, navigate to Clouds > Google Images where RightScale queries every few minutes for the images.
