Add a CloudStack Cloud to a RightScale Account

Objective

To add an existing private cloud (CloudStack) to a RightScale account so that users of the account can access the private cloud and its resources.

Table of Contents

Prerequisites

  • A registered private cloud. See Register a CloudStack Cloud with RightScale.
  • The private cloud's Access Token (e.g. KSDEKSDEK), which can be provided to you by the administrator of the private cloud (i.e. the person who registered the private cloud with RightScale).
  • Your RightScale account must be enabled for adding a private cloud. Please contact your RightScale Account Manager for details. If you do not have an Account Manager, please contact the sales department at sales@rightscale.com.
  • In order to add a private cloud, you must be an 'admin' user in the RightScale account.
  • You must also have a set of non-admin user credentials. The private cloud's administrator can provide you with valid user credentials.
  • If you must have multiple CloudStack users associated with multiple RightScale accounts for the same cloud endpoint, make sure the other non-admin users have the same user role privileges on the cloud resources. Otherwise, this will lead to unpredictable results.

Steps

Add a Private Cloud

  1. Go to SettingsAccount SettingsClouds > Connect to a Cloud
Note: If you do not see this button, your RightScale account is not enabled for adding a private cloud. Please contact your account manager for details.
  2. Click Connect to Private Cloud.

Enter the Cloud Credentials

Next, enter your CloudStack Credentials given to you by the CloudStack cloud administrator or taken from the CloudStack console.

  • Account Name - Provide a name/username that this RightScale account will use to access the private cloud's resources.
  • Api Key - This value is provided by CloudStack management console.
  • Auth Key - This value is provided by CloudStack management console.

Check the cloud status

On the same Clouds tab or on the Cloud Credentials widget in the Overview tab, you may check the status of your cloud.

  • Cloud Controller - Displays the status of your cloud.
  • Cloud Account - Displays the status of your cloud credentials.

Both of these items must be valid and active (green) in order to successfully launch cloud server.

Next Steps

Allow RightScale several minutes to populate your account with the appropriate images before launching servers. In the RightScale Dashboard, navigate to Clouds > CloudStack Images where RightScale queries every few minutes for the images.

To upload RightScale RightImages to your OpenStack cloud, see Upload RightImages to a Private Cloud.
