Why do some decommission scripts not finish executing during shutdown (on EC2 instances)?

Table of Contents

Background Information

Sometimes, long decommissioning scripts may get interrupted during the shutdown process.

Answer

After a shutdown request is issued, Amazon forces the shutdown after 115 seconds if it has not yet completed.

If your decommission script takes longer than this to run, it won't finish completing since the instance will be terminated by Amazon.
