Symptoms of server's time being out of sync

Table of Contents

Overview

When the server time is out of sync by one minute or more, RightLink will fail to connect to our broker servers, which can cause issues with the server running scripts and also with decomissioning. Recipes will fail show "request failed" in the audit entries, automated scripts will also fail with the same audit entry.

Resolution

When the time is out if sync on the server you will want to check the NTP input first "NTP Servers" and make sure there is a valid input present (i.e. "time.rightscale.com, ec2-us-east.time.rightscale.com, ec2-us-west.time.rightscale.com").

Steps for CentOS

  • First you will need to stop the NTP service by running "service ntpd stop"
  • Then run "ntpdate time.rightscale.com" which forces the server time to update.
  • Then run "service ntpd start" which will start the NTP daemon.

The steps are the same for Ubuntu, the only difference is the service names.

Steps for Ubuntu

  • First you will need to stop the NTP service by running "service ntp stop"
  • Then run "ntpdate time.rightscale.com" which forces the server time to update.
  • Then run "service ntp start" which will start the NTP daemon.
