This FAQ explains how to enable debug level logging on a Rightscale enabled server or instance running Rightlink. The debug log output will be produced in the Rightlink system logs for review.
This article will be useful for debugging stranded servers where not much information is returned in the audit entries, which will in turn assist with troubleshooting the source of it's failure. It is also useful for Rightscale technical support and Rightscale's escalation team, which may require this information should a specific support incident need escalation. This can also be used to produce any other failing Chef recipes or scripts as well, which will come in handy when troubleshooting your own custom operational scripts or recipes.
NOTE: We only recommend enabling this on an AS NEEDED BASIS. When finished with the debugging, it is best to remove the tag on subsequent server/instance launches. It is also not recommended to restart the Rightlink agent more than is needed, and it should ideally only be restarted with the assistance and direction of a Rightscale technical support engineer.
To accomplish this, we must tag our server/instance with a specific tag. This tag is also case sensitive, so it must be added exactly as shown here:
You will want to add this tag to the server/instance itself (not the servertemplate, deployment or image). Once added, you will then need to restart the Rightlink agent (not recommended on a regular basis, only use for troubleshooting purposes).
Follow the directions below for your appropriate platform.
Open up an SSH terminal into your instance and then type in the command:
service rightlink restart
this should restart the Rightlink agent and re-enroll the instance with our core servers. The debug logs will be available in the /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog system files as needed.
Open up an RDP session to your server and login as an administrator. Once logged in, go to Start -> Run and type in these commands:
net stop Rightlink; net start Rightlink
This will stop and restart the Rightlink agent and re-enroll the instance with our core servers. If you do not have the Start -> Run option, you can also accomplish this from the Windows command line.
This will output debug logs to the Rightlink logs (not the audit entries), which can then be retrieved and reviewed as needed. For information on Windows log locations please see this FAQ
