When using a custom AMI, my instance remains in "Booting" state with no helpful audit entries

Table of Contents

Background Information

When using a custom Amazon Machine Image (AMI) that is RightScale-enabled (using RightLink), you may see an instance stuck in a "Booting" state. Additionally, there will be no helpful audit entries to point you in the right direction when it comes to troubleshooting.

Answer

To make your AMI RightScale compatible, ensure that you have the latest RightLink daemon installed on the image before rebundling. Follow the directions under Creating RightScale-Enabled Images with RightLink.

This problem in particular may result from omitting the "provides:rs_agent_type=right_link" tag on the AMI. After installing Rightlink and rebundling your AMI, make sure you add this tag to the AMI indefinitely to ensure that it is RightScale compatible.
